Democrat Samuel Tilden won the popular vote by over 250,000 but only had 184 Electoral Votes (185 needed to win) with 20 disputed votes from four states.  Three Southern states said they would vote for Republican Rutherford Hayes if he ended Reconstruction and removed federal troops. Hayes was awarded all 20 votes and won 185-184 resulting in 90 years of Jim Crow in the South.
