The Civil War amendments ended slavery, guaranteed birthright citizenship, and transformed the relationship between the federal and state governments. Yet their bright promise was betrayed for almost a century. In this lecture Joyce Haworth will explore the history behind those amendments — the dreams, the politics, the struggle for ratification, the violence against the freed people, and ultimately, the power of racism to steal legal rights.
Joyce will be presenting in the library, please join us in the Library or on Zoom.
