Program Description

Event Details

Come and explore the fascinating heritage of American Christmas and New Year Traditions.  We’ll discover how/when December 25th was designated as “Christmas” and when it became a federal holiday.  We’ll also explore: the history of Santa Claus, why we exchange gifts and decorate our homes at Christmas; who initiated Christmas Cards and Christmas Seals; Christmas Movies; and Popular American Christmas Music. Looking ahead to the New Year - we’ll learn why a Ball is dropped from a flagpole on top the Times Tower in NYC as well as why “Auld Lang Syne” is sung at New Year’s Eve celebrations. And let’s not forget about the Three Kings. Were they really kings and just what is a King Cake?

Barbara will be presenting in the library, please join us in person or via Zoom.
